Soroptimist International Woodbridge and Manassas presented a forum, “Human Trafficking: A Global Issue Close to Home,” on February 1st at the Edward L. SI Manassas Honors Members' Milestones

Soroptimist International of Manassas honored several long time members with anniversary pins.  Yvonne Conatser, Katie Smith and Dottie Heskett were recognized for 10 years of service to the club.  Judy Dennis was given a very special 40 year pin. Judy joined SI Manassas in 1973 and is a very active member of the club.

"Trusty Keg" Fun Filled Evening

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors and guests "The Trusty Keg" raised over $5,000 for Soroptimist scholarships, grants and programs to benefit women and girls. Guests enjoyed a Western themed mystery play performed by Entree Act, wingspan raffle, dinner and silent auction.  SI Manassas presented the Women's Opportunity Award, Elizabeth Davies Scholarship, Violet Richardson Award and the Ruby (Women Helping Women) Award.

NOVEC was the main sponsor.  Virginia Arms sponsored tickets for the award winners and their families.

"Human Trafficking In Your Own Backyard"

Soroptimist International of Manassas' presented a symposium to raise awareness of human trafficking in our local community.  Our expert panel: Dr. Courtney Gaskins, Director of Program Services, Youth For Tomorrow, Laura Glasscock, Director of ACTS/SAVAS, Detective Michelle Nemerow, Prince William County Police Department and Deepa Patel, CSOTP, LCSW, Gang Intervention and Sex Offender Program Coordinator, Multicultural Clinical Center updated the audience in this growing crime where gangs target young girls in our community for sex trafficking.

Women's Opportunity Award

Do you know a woman who is her family's primary bread winner and is going to college or technical school to improve her job skills? Soroptimist International of Manassas' 2013 Women's Opportunity Award can help her achieve her goal. WOA is a $1,500 grant that can be used for books, tuition, childcare or other expenses.

Eligible applicants must provide primary financial support for their families, and be enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program.

Turning Point Suffragist Memorial

Kathy Pablo of the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial presented a dynamic and educational talk on the history of the suffragist movement in the United States and the "Night of Terror" where women were arrested, beaten, imprisioned for picketing the White House for the right to vote.

Prospective Member Event

Soroptimist International of Manassas held its second annual prospective member event at the Old Towne Sports Pub.  Members and guests enjoyed playing "20 Questions BINGO", delicious food & drink, and a tea party gift basket raffle.  Prospective members learned about the club's mission to improve the lives of women and girls in the local community.

Prince William County Chamber of Commerce selected Soroptimist International of Manassas as a finalist in both the Excellence in Business and Agnes L. Colgan Community Service Award categories. Our club was recognized for the Women's Opportunity Award for women pursuing higher education, our human trafficking awareness programs and service to our local community's non-profits.

Local Teens Win Violet Richardson Award

Soroptimist International of Manassas presented two Violet Richardson Awards this past Saturday to Kathryn Testut and Kalah Harris.  The award goes to a girl between the ages of 14 and 17 who is committed to making the world a better place and has demonstrated inititive in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it.
