Local Women Honored at "Evening of Comedy & Magic"

Kristina Ewell, WOA recipient & Becky Goodman, President

Members and guests were kept laughing at Scott Alexander's mix of comedy and magic.  Many thanks go to our main sponsors NOVEC, Latimer Consulting and Virginia Arms.

The evening was an opportunity to recognize some very extraordinary women for their achievements.  Kristina Ewell, a single mother of a 3-year old daughter and a recent graduate of Nothern Virginia Community College's Certified Nursing Assistant's Program was presented with a $1500 Women's Opportunity Award.  The WOA is a grant for a woman who is the financial support of her family and pursuing an undergraduate degree or skilled jobs training. Kristina plans to continue her education to become a registered nurse.  A second Women's Opportunity Award was given to Amanda Nguyen who is studying for a degree in Community Health.

Anelle Mensah, Violet Richardson Award winner was recognized for her work mentoring students at Grace Miller Elementary School's "Big Buddy" Program.

Ellen Chang, Bridges Program Coordinator, won both the local and regional Soroptimist's Ruby Award for women helping women.  Through the Bridges Program, teen mothers learn parenting skills, are encouraged to continue their education and become responsible parents.  Ellen strongly supports outreach efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect and works closely with the school system to provide affordable in-school day care so teen mothers can attend classes and earn their diplomas.

Proceeds from "An Evening of Comedy & Magic" will fund next year's awards and grants for women and girls.
